You all know how shitty 2020 was already. My coping mechanism was JRPGs. A lot of them. And a few other games, I guess. Here’s my annual thoughts about the games I played this year, listed roughly in order of my least to most favorite.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

It’s me, I’m the guy who hates Fire Emblem, but gets bullied into playing it anyway. After 6 months of peer pressure I caved and bought Three Houses. Don’t misunderstand Three Houses’s position in the list the list though. I don’t think it’s a bad game, but it’s definitely not for me.

Faster than the blink of an eye, the glint of sharpened steel streaked through the shadows. With the sound of knives sheathing, all suddenly went dark for Goblin Lord, as his cleanly severed head slid off of his body.

The assassin’s victory was cut short, however, as the late Lord’s ogre mercenary had already begun a wide swing of the tree trunk he called a club. From above came a yell that could send the gods running in fear. A sudden burst of red mist appeared and dissipated in time to see the massive tree club flying safely away, the…

Way back in 2014 I had just finished Bravely Default and felt the need to post my opinions of it on the internet. Since then, it’s been sitting on my site, basically inaccessible and collecting dust. It’s not too dissimilar from the other articles I’ve written here, so I figured I would import it.

Bravely Default is an RPG for the Nintendo 3DS, created by Square-Enix and developed by Silicon Studio. It was released in North America on February 7th, 2014. Blah blah blah, information shamelessly ripped from wikipedia. If you want more lists of objective facts about the game…

(This is fiction based on The Two Popes, commissioned by Pinguino on twitter)

It was a bright, clear afternoon in Vatican City. The soothing sounds of a gentle breeze and the occasional chirping of birds were suddenly interrupted by the mechanical groaning of an automobile racing down the path. With a whine, its breaks halted it just in front of the door to the Pope’s residence. The passenger door opened and out stepped the baby-faced young Cardinal, Jorge Mario Bergoglio. …

It’s that time of year again. The time where I write entirely too much about the entirely too long list of games I played this year, very loosely ranked from worst to best. This one is even longer than last year. I either need to play fewer games or learn how to be more concise when writing my thoughts. I will likely do neither.

Final Fantasy Adventure

As a wee tot I loved Secret of Mana with all my heart, so the mana collection announcement during E3 knocked my socks off. I had always wanted to play this supposed sequel to Secret of…

I played the Gamecube version: Skies of Arcadia Legends. I don’t know what the differences are from the Dreamcast version, but from what I’ve seen, I think everything here applied to both versions.

Skies of Arcadia is a game I had heard many rumblings about, but rarely more than just a name drop. Any and all details about the game completely eluded me until recently when I decided to give it a try. I had actually wanted to try it previously, even going as far as finding a [completely legitimate copy], but the [actual Gamecube system] had a number of issues running it at the time. It works perfectly fine now, so with the urging of a few twitter followers, I embarked on fantastical adventure in the skies… of Arcadia.

I actually appreciate…

I have a long history with the metroidvania genre, and a shorter but no less distant relationship to Koji Igarashi’s installments in the Castlevania series. Iga’s metroidvania Castlevanias (or “Igavanias”) consumed a good chunk of my life back in 2017 as I played through all of them, most for the first time. I played them all back-to-back and wrote far too many words about them and their relation to my beloved Metroid series. Now there’s a new game in the series, so here I am again. Shameless self promotion: You should read my Castlevania writeup here.

I guess this is basically a yearly tradition for me now. It’s time to look back at all the games I played this year and give my thoughts on them. They’re listed vaguely in increasing order of how much I enjoyed them. Before you ask, I’m not including Smash Ultimate and Let’s Go Eevee on this list because I don’t feel like I’ve played enough of them to form solid opinions yet.

Dragalia Lost

Dragalia is very horny for dragons

After Fire Emblem Heroes, I truly thought I would never play another mobile gacha game. What a fool I was. …

The complete map of Metroid (1986)

What is a Metroidvania?

In simplest terms, a metroidvania is a sub-genre of the adventure genre that emphasizes exploration, free-roaming worlds and progression through player mobility that gradually opens access to the world. As the name suggests, the most notable games of the genre includes almost all of the Metroid series and a decent portion of the Castlevania series. While each game has its own variation on the formula, the basic elements have been used frequently since the 1980s.

Metroid (1986) on the NES pioneered the metroidvania genre. It featured the player character, Samus, exploring a vast and complex cave system with interconnecting tunnels…

I did this on a whim last year and this year has been one of the best years for video games ever so I figured I’d do it again. My mistake was deciding to write something about every game I played this year, instead of only those that came out this year. Turns out I played a lot of games! Oh boy! These are listed roughly in ascending order of how much I personally enjoyed them and not necessarily a ranking of their actual quality.

#30 Animal Crossing Pocket Camp

Animal Crossing is a series that I managed to pass by completely. I had never…

Beep boop I am a robot that plays too many video games and sometimes writes about them.
